‘Off-the-shelf’ Electronic Earplug Line

An ‘Off-the-shelf’ Electronic Earplug Line for Police Tactical Teams has been developed by E.A.R.,Inc./Insta-Mold.

The device allows users to still hear their surrounding sounds, and/or radios, but limits the decibel levels of gunfire.

The units are available in both analogue and digital formats and could be a useful addition to a teams training and tactics during a raid or for general practice.

They are packaged to be interchangeable so if an officer leaves the team, the unit could be assigned to another officer without any loss to budget money for other equipment.

Hatch Centurion Tactical Kneepad

A knee pad with multi-layer protection has been developed by US-based Hatch Centurion™.

The TLS Tactical Kneepad, has a triple-layer knee protection system and additional protective and comfort features not available in one product until now.

It starts with a PVC shell sewn on to a Cordura® nylon shell, and features Neoprene to allow stretch and hold the kneepad in place more effectively. It is followed by a 1/4’ section of Skydex®, a shock-absorbing material, a layer of EVA foam and covered with another layer of foam and a soft tricot liner.

Air space between the layers gives greater protection and shock absorption, says the company. In comparative Peak G test results, the design significantly outperformed other foam products.

Adjustable Quick On/Off Clips make these deep well kneepads fast and easy to put on and take off.

Auto-txt to Help Fight Car Thefts

A new car security system that identifies car owners through their mobile phones has been launched.
Auto-txt immediately identifies a car as stolen if the car is started with the keys but the mobile phone is not present.

If police are following a stolen car, Auto-txt allows them to track the vehicle and prevent it restarting using remote wireless technology once the vehicle ignition is turned off.

It is the first stolen vehicle protection and tracking system to have been awarded Thatcham's Category 5 accreditation, the new insurance industry standard that is supported by the police, according to the company.

Auto-txt was developed by Richmond Design & Marketing (RDM) Group, a Coventry based automotive supplier that has just raised funds of £4.75 million to develop the system.

Sussex Gets £100,000 Search Vehicle from ATF

A specially-adapted support vehicle costing £100,000 has been officially handed over to the Sussex Police Specialist Search Unit by the police authority.

The vehicle, custom built to the unit’s requirements, is located at Shoreham Airport where the full-time police team provide a range of search operations including underwater, crime and counter terrorism.

SSU members worked with the Force’s fleet manager, Dennis Ord and Mark Walton, managing director of Hampshire-based ATF (Automotive Technik Fabrications) who won the contract to build the £105,000 vehicle in 2004, to ensure the vehicle matched operational requirements.

Handing over the vehicle, Mr Barnard, the Authority’s lead member on the Force’s specialist operations, said: 'This collaborative process has ensured that the finished vehicle precisely meets the operational requirement and offers a long and durable service life, planned to be at least ten years.'

Sgt Mark Cannadine, who leads the SSU, said: 'This is exactly what we require. Policing and policing regions will doubtless change in the coming years, but the specialist skills of a unit like the SSU will always be needed to meet the challenges of fighting crime and countering terrorism.'

Fleet manager, Dennis Ord, said: 'We are very proud of this vehicle, not least because of the contributions that have been made from various areas of the Force, particularly the SSU’s PC Steve Hargreaves, in planning and interpreting the needs of the unit and our part in finalising the design under the guidance of ATF and other sub-contractors.

'At 12.5 tonnes with fluorescent police markings, 16 strobe blue and red flashing lights and a traffic clearing siren, you won’t miss it!'

Inside, the crew space has a changing area, galley facilities and communications and IT equipment required to manage and control any search operation.

Eagle Searches Day and Night

Allen-Vanguard's Eagle Video Search Kit enables detailed searches to be carried out both day and night.

The versatile Eagle kit has a flexible under vehicle trolley, a colour camera and an LCD screen. Designed for tactical search in many sectors, including law enforcement, customs and the military, it can be easily converted from a single-use tool to a multi-purpose search system.

The device features sensors which activate infra-red lights if it is too dark. At the same time, the camera automatically switches from colour to black and white, meaning that the system will produce top-quality images, whatever the conditions.

The under vehicle trolley has a low axis, allowing it to be used beneath smaller vehicles, as well as under aeroplane seats or office furniture.

In 'pole cam' mode, the camera is attached to a telescopic pole that extends to 183cm and makes it possible for out-of-reach places to be inspected. The kit can be changed to this mode quickly and easily, giving operators visual access over fences and walls, down alleyways and inside attics without putting themselves at risk.

‘As it can be used by day or night, the Eagle Video Search Kit is indispensable for anyone requiring a detailed, close-up view of a suspect area,’ said Roy Peers-Smith, president and chief executive officer of Allen-Vanguard. ‘It is also extremely adaptable and can be operated with minimal difficulty and danger.’

Allen-Vanguard is exhibiting at Milipol this week.

New Motor for URBACO Bollards

URBACO has presented a new motorisation for the company’s Generation 6 line automatic retractable bollards.

After the electro-pneumatic motorisation, some of the Generation 6 line automatic retractable bollards are now available with an electro-hydraulic motorisation, using an electric pump and bio-degradable oil.

The advantage of this new motorisation is the very high thrust (pressure) obtained as well as the strong resistance developed to vertical loads when the bollard is completely upward; this is due to the incompressibility of fluids.

URBACO certified to the ISO 14001 standard, the reward for its performance in environmental management.

This certificate -issued by BVQI and based on internationally recognised criteria- is a token of recognition for the maturity and efficiency of URBACO's Environmental Management System.
