People From Corby Help Train PCSOs
Young people from Corby travelled to Wootton Hall to
help prepare PCSOs on Safer Community Teams for life on county streets.
Three
young people from Corby delivered a training session at Northamptonshire
Polices headquarters designed to show the Safer Community Team members
how young people would prefer to be treated.
The training session was the brainchild of charity Groundwork North Northamptonshire
in conjunction with Corby Safer Community Team Sergeant Julie Mead and
the Training Department's, Kate Beck.
Charmain Warren, 21, of Bampton Court, Corby, said: 'PCSOs will be out
there on the streets working with young people so we feel its important
that they get a young persons perspective on various issues.
'We ran lots of exercises on issues such as stereotyping and respect and
made the session as fun as possible.
'They listened to our opinions and it was a very worthwhile training session.'
The young people, who also included 17-year-old Lewis Davison, of Exmouth
Avenue and Stefan Stratford, 16, of Croyde Avenue, met 20 PCSOs, 1 Sergeant
and 1 Inspector in the training department on Wednesday 23rd July.
Stefan said: 'I think it went very well. We want Police Community Support
Officers to understand how young people think.'
Ann-Marie Lawson, of Groundwork North Northamptonshire, said: 'We would
like to thank Northamptonshire Police for involving the young people in
the training of Police Community Support Officers.'
Sergeant Julie Mead said: 'The young people were really interesting and
informative and I think we all learned a lot from the event.' Kate Beck
said: 'The SCT course ensures the SCT staff have the necessary skills
to perform their roles within the community effectively.
'Youth engagement is an important element of their role. This particular
session is very interactive, with many different exercises that make the
SCT staff think about how they would positively interact with young people
in the future. The success of this session depends on the young people
and Anne-Maries fun but informative approach.'
