Year Old Volunteer Urges Others to Support Leicestershire Police
A community volunteer who celebrated his 80th birthday
on Monday July 21st is urging others to give up their time to support
their local police.
Des
Logsdon and his wife Jean from Leicester have been volunteering for Leicesteshire Constabulary
for the past seven years. As community volunteers they work unpaid in
a diverse range of roles alongside police officers and police staff and
are asked to give between two and four hours of their time per week.
Community Initiatives Co-ordinator at Welford Road Police Station, David
Budd, said:
'Over the past seven years Des and Jean have staffed a police desk on
the Eyres Monsell and also staffed the front desk at Wigston police station
following training. They attend most community events organised by Welford
Road police station and assist officers by handing out leaflets, staffing
information stalls and providing refreshments. They also run coffee mornings
every Thursday on the Eyres Monsell estate.
'We are so grateful to them for the time they give up every week to assist
Welford Road local policing unit and the work we do in the community.
They are an important part of our team.
'We wish Des a very happy 80th birthday and hope he inspires others to
consider volunteering some of their time to help their local police.'
Des said: 'The work that my wife and I are involved with is very rewarding.
We run a weekly coffee morning for senior citizens in Eyres Monsell and
even organise a couple of bus trips each year.
'I retired 15 years ago and I really enjoy volunteering. It's certainly
better than sitting in my chair all day. There are so many varied jobs
that community volunteers can carry out and I hope more people will consider
helping their local police in this way.'
There are no formal qualifications needed for the role of community volunteer
but honesty, integrity and basic numeracy and literacy are essential.
Volunteers should also have a positive and friendly approach towards the
public, an ability to work in a team and a willingness to learn new skills.
All tasks undertaken by community volunteers are intended to assist or
supplement the work undertaken by police officers and police staff.
