International Fishing Day – Thetford

The free event, at Kingfisher Lakes on Sunday August 3rd, will pit two mixed teams of local English and Eastern European anglers against one another for the chance to win prizes and medals.

The event, which has been organised by a group of local agencies with an interest in angling on the right side of the law, aims to bind diverse local communities and create cultural awareness using angling as a common interest.

Supported by Norfolk Constabulary and the Thetford Safer Neighbourhood Team, the day is sponsored by Breckland Angling Coaching Club, the Environment Agency and the GMB Union.

Simon Davis, owner of the Kingfisher Lake, has generously provided the use of his facilities so this event could take place.

PC Ashley Grant, Minority & Ethnic Liaison Officer for the Breckland area, said: 'Any organised event that brings all parts of our diverse community together under a common purpose will benefit the community as a whole.

'The event will bring together like-minded people from different nations for a day of good-natured sport.'

Angling legislation in the UK is enforced by the Environment Agency and the police. The event also aims to raise awareness among local anglers of all nationalities about the laws surrounding fishing in the UK.

Steve Walker, manager of the Breckland Angling Coaching Club said: 'Fishing is a sport enjoyed by millions of people in the UK and many migrant workers also love the sport and would like to have the opportunity to go fishing.

'The UK has many laws and rules that every angler has to follow and if you are a migrant worker from elsewhere in Europe it's possible that you will not be aware of all the UK laws.

'It is hoped new friends will be made and skills shared between all the different nationalities. The day will have a real family feel to it as both women and children will also be encouraged to take part too.'

All residents from Thetford and the surrounding area are welcome to come and take part in the day's events.
