Neath PCSO Praised in River Bridge Rescue

A Neath Police Community Support Officer has been put forward for a commendation after talking down a man who was threatening to jump off a bridge.

PCSO Laura Parry was on foot patrol in Neath Town Centre on Saturday morning when she discovered the man at Bridge Street.

He was in a confused and distressed state and was standing on a wall with a substantial drop to the river below.

PCSO Parry calmly spoke to the man before grabbing him off the wall to safety. She radioed colleagues for help who arrived at the scene and took the man to hospital.

Neath Neighbourhood Inspector Mark Lenihan said: 'There is no doubt that the man was intent on jumping off the bridge into the river.

'The officer acted professionally and bravely to take hold of the man and pull him to safety. She had to restrain him while her colleagues arrived at the scene.

'After the event PCSO Parry was concerned that she was now running late to be on duty at Neath Carnival and didn’t want to let her colleagues down.

'This speaks volumes for her dedication and commitment to her role.'
