Bomb
Blast Neutralizer now Available to UK Police
A
rapid response portable bomb disposal unit is now available to UK police
forces.
The Bomb Blast Neutralizer is made by Counterterrorism
Technologies Corporation in the US and was recently exhibited
at the AVSEC, the world conference on Airport Security held in Geneva
last week.
The device provides two levels of bomb disposal. Type A is for the majority
of covertly placed improvised explosive devices concealed in small back-packs,
satchels and hand baggage. Type B tackles larger sized travel baggage
and shipments.
The CTC BBN is placed over the suspect package and a projectile is fired
into it to try and disrupt the IED firing mechanism and prevent the device
from detonating.
If this fails, a built-in detonator ignites the IED. The blast is contained
with the chamber in approximately one millionth of a second, reaching
a velocity of approximately nine miles per second and temperatures up
to 9000 degrees Fahrenheit.
It has the capacity to neutralise several lbs of TNT and can be deployed
by just one person.
