A
Raft of Good Ideas
Britain
has a growing reputation as a surveillance society. That may be the
case, but for many in law enforcement monitoring people's activities
often results in hazy CCTV images which, when magnified, merge into
the background making it impossible to identify the subject. Product
of the Week claims to have solved this problem. J2KV, the
maker, says that its SharpView system captures images at 12 frames a
second giving pin sharp images.
Road traffic accidents are one of the toughest areas of policing, but
imagine the feeling of total helplessness when you turn up to a scene
and the person is alive, but trapped in a burning vehicle. MC Products
is currently selling a US device designed to overcome that situation
(see Equipment).
Finally, one force has given 20 pedometers to its PSCOs to measure how
far they walk on patrol (see News). It's a great idea, although
we would like to issue a word of warning. What seems like an interesting
exercise today could become the latest Government target tomorrow! Distance
walked is of course measurable and could be enough to get Ministers
excited and begin demanding foot patrols complete a minimum number of
miles a day. Imagine!

depth discussions of today's policing issues
Face
Up to the Future
Chris
Cross QPM is a former senior oficer who now works for Aurora
Computer Services Ltd. Here he talks about how facial recognition
is set to become the third forensic science in police investigations:
In March 2006 I attended a one day conference at which a Deputy
Chief Constable delivered, in my opinion, a presentation that
was for a man of his rank surprisingly yet refreshingly frank
in both the analysis of the effectiveness of current policing
and in what the public expect from their police.
