Sapping
Morale
Jan
Berry, Chair of the Police Federation has been very outspoken
this week. Firstly she has expressed her concern that sentences for
convicted criminals are being decided by prison over crowding (see News),
making a mockery of the criminal justice system. She has followed that
with an equally strong response to the news that the number of police
officers has fallen in the last year (see News), stating that
she fears that public safety has been put at risk.
Mrs Berry is right of course. And the real danger is the effect on the
morale of officers. Being too stretched to work effectively and then
having all the hard work getting a conviction undone by inappropriate
sentencing is bound to sap enthusiasm and as a result the effectiveness
of UK policing.
On a more positive note, our new job site, www.allpolicejobs.co.uk,
received an overwhelming response when it went live last week. We have
hundreds of new police and staff jobs this week and, don't forget to
keep checking as the site is updated every day!

Analyst's Notebook Aids Investigation
The
murder of five women in Suffolk has prompted hundreds of calls to
the force resulting in thousands of pieces of information in a bid
to track down the killer or killers. Years ago, the task of sifting
through that amount of information and determining its significance
would take many hours with no guarantee that something hadn't been
missed. Today forces use sophisticated analytical software to process
large volumes of data to inform an investigation.
