Sapping Morale

Jan Berry, Chair of the Police Federation has been very outspoken this week. Firstly she has expressed her concern that sentences for convicted criminals are being decided by prison over crowding (see News), making a mockery of the criminal justice system. She has followed that with an equally strong response to the news that the number of police officers has fallen in the last year (see News), stating that she fears that public safety has been put at risk.

Mrs Berry is right of course. And the real danger is the effect on the morale of officers. Being too stretched to work effectively and then having all the hard work getting a conviction undone by inappropriate sentencing is bound to sap enthusiasm and as a result the effectiveness of UK policing.

On a more positive note, our new job site, www.allpolicejobs.co.uk, received an overwhelming response when it went live last week. We have hundreds of new police and staff jobs this week and, don't forget to keep checking as the site is updated every day!
