Co-operation
is the Key
The
year draws to a close with Suffolk conducting one of the largest murder
investigations ever (see News). This time last year, forces were
immersed in the issue of merging with small forces such as Suffolk set
to benefit the most. However, the level of professionalism and skill
demonstrated in this investigation has shown that co-operation as opposed
to wholesale amalgamation is key - something the Association of Police
Authorities argued for from the start. Essex and Hertfordshire police
have further demonstrated the potential of closer working relationships
by opening the first joint custody suite (see News) this week.
The media has drawn inevitable parallels between the Yorkshire Ripper
and the Suffolk serial killer. But the two investigations could not
be more different. Whereas, the Ripper inquiry was paper-based, the
Suffolk investigation will rely heavily on analysts to sift the information
and present it in a form that senior detectives can understand and act
upon. Our Big Feature takes a closer look at the behind the scenes
work of the crime analysts.
2006 has seen the introduction of many technological advances, most
aimed at allowing frontline officers to carry out their work remotely
without having to return the police station. Mobile fingerprinting and
this week's latest trial; handheld ANPR palmtops look set to continue
this trend (see Equipment). The challenge is to ensure that all
forces benefit from the technology that's available and not just the
few.
Finally, as Securizine takes a short break, we would like to
wish all our readers and sponsors a very peaceful Christmas and New
Year. See you in 2007.

Analyst's Notebook Aids Investigation
The
murder of five women in Suffolk has prompted hundreds of calls to the
force resulting in thousands of pieces of information in a bid to track
down the killer or killers. Years ago, the task of sifting through that
amount of information and determining its significance would take many
hours with no guarantee that something hadn't been missed. Today forces
use sophisticated analytical software to process large volumes of data
to inform an investigation.
