Services Need the Tools for the Job

The courageous actions of the emergency services, underground staff and members of the public in the aftermath of the 7/7 attacks in London left a lasting impression on all of us who could just stand by and watch in horror as the events of that day unfolded. But according to a report out by the London Assembly this week, the rescue operation was hampered by the inability of the emergency services to be able to communicate with each other. This comes as no surprise to those in the emergency services (see NEWS). Unfortunately, the situation could get worse before it gets better.

This week Anite also released a report (see POLICE IT) warning that government plans to merge forces could delay emergency responses for up to 15 minutes if forces fail to integrate their IT systems. Amalgamated forces are in danger of not being able to talk across old boundary lines.

During 7/7 the sheer professionalism and dedication of all those involved may have overcome the inadequacies of their communication equipment, but that really isn't acceptable when the technology exists, but the will to implement it fully and properly doesn't.

Outsourcing used to be unfamiliar territory in policing. Now many forces are beginning to see the benefits of using outside organisations to take on certain roles. Surrey, always an innovative force, is using an outside firm to undertake CCTV viewing, an onerous and time-consuming task, which has freed up its officers to get on with the job of investigating crime (see NEWS).
