Bureaucracy is the New Enemy

As May draws to a close, reporters at Securizine pause for breath after what has been a frenetic month. As many of you know, we attended Police Expo at the NEC, the Police Federation Conference in Bournemouth and last week we were at the ACPO Event in London. What struck us all was the nature of the products on show.

Twenty years ago, when life was simpler, exhibitions showcased equipment directly aimed at catching offenders or preventing crime. Many of the products and services now on offer are designed to tackle the new enemy - bureaucracy. The theory is that a reduction in paperwork equals more officers on the beat. It's an interesting sign of the times when a Chief Constable wins an award for increased efficiency (see Awards).

Rewarding officers for their efforts to reduce the administrative burden is a positive step, but the true reward must be that they do in fact return to the beat for their primary purpose of reducing crime and that the void is not filled by yet another Government initiative, spewing yet more forms to be completed in triplicate.

Finally our thoughts go out to the officer attacked by a knifeman near Dunstable this week (see News). As the Federation suggests, maybe we need more than a five week-long national knife amnesty to reverse a culture increasingly comfortable with the idea of carrying these weapons. Securizine wishes the victim a speedy recovery.
