Government Climb-Down is a 'Small Victory'

Although not over by any means, the negotiations around an improved pay offer received a welcome boost
last week in a government climb-down on back-dating allowances.

The Home Secretary has decided to back-date in full increases in the dog handler's allowance, the London Weighting and the Competence Related Threshold Payments (CRTP). Jan Berry, Chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, says:

'This is a small but significant victory in our continuing fight for fair pay for police, and shows that the anger and strength of feeling of betrayal we feel has been recognised by the government. (See News).

Plus! - More budget reports in this week - from Dyfed, Cheshire, Suffolk and Northants (see News).

And, in the wake of the Flanagan Report, it is encouraging to see Strathclyde rolling out a new technology trial using PDAs which allow operational officers to record crime and vehicle accident reports, take witness statements and notes.  The information can then be downloaded onto a computer without duplication (see Police IT).

Finally, we welcome three new advertisers this week - all major suppliers of products and equipment to the police service - Ovation, Microbus and Gladstone Boots. We rely on these advertisers to keep the Securizine going, so please support us and them by clicking the banners.
