Low Copy DNA Back on the Agenda

A significant development in the world of forensics this week has seen the ban on low copy DNA evidence lifted (see Forensics). ACPO will be writing to all forces this week with new guidlines on the use of low copy DNA evidence, the use of which has been suspended since defence lawyers questioned its validity in the Omagh bomb trial.

There can be no doubt that the use of low copy DNA will no longer be viewed as the absolute clincher it used to be, and that it will now only be used as part of a broader body of evidence to gain a conviction. However, they are in danger of missing the point. The technique, as such, appears to be OK; it's the rigorous standards of evidence collection that seem to be the problem (eg the McCann's vehicle in Portugal).

Well done to the Police Federation for doing its best to keep the pay campaign in the public eye, with both the march next week (see News) and appearances on TV and radio news programmes and it is clear that they feel real anger about the way their members have been treated. After all it's not often you see a police federation press release come out about teacher's pay! (see News).

Finally, a welcome to our latest advertiser, BT, who is now the UK's sole distributor for Cylon's body worn video camera (see Product of the Week). The system has featured previously in Securizine, most notably after the success of the trial in Devon and Cornwall, and hopefully the national roll out will see similar results aross the country.
