Bah
Humbug!
There really is only one topic we could lead on today, and that is of
course Home Secretary Jacqui Smith's refusal to backdate the police
pay rise to September 1st. So many things about her decision are bizarre,
not least the fact that Scottish officers are getting it, which seems
to add to the injustice.
On top of that, the sight of the official side negotiators and the APA
supporting the rank and file position and some 87 (and counting) MPs,
including up to 10 government ministers, petitioning her to backtrack
- not to mention the timing of the announcement just before Christmas
when public sympathy for the police, having to work through the festive
period, is at its highest - only increases the Home secretary's isolation.
The strangest thing about the conflict however, is the paltry amount
of money the government is digging its heels in over. Pocketing a couple
of hundred pounds from each officer will hardly pay for Northern Rock
to get back on its feet. It has, though, caused strike action to be
seriously discussed and almost certainly cost them tens of thousands
of votes at the next election.
