Cozart’s Ecstasy Detection Test Receives UK Patent
Officers are now able to conduct roadside tests for the drug ecstasy following an announcement by Cozart that the company’s Ecstasy Detection test has received its UK patent. The technology covered by this patent is used in the new Cozart methamphetamine/ecstasy powders test, one of a family of such tests the company is launching for sale this week.

PITO Looking for Non-Contact Whole Hand Scanner
The Police Information Technology Organisation is in the market for a non-contact whole hand scanner. Dr Fred Preston, Director of Identification at PITO said the organisation was looking for a contact-less scanner with the ability to scan the whole hand. ‘The market is wide open. At the moment you have to put your hand on the scanner and there are issues around that.

NEC Calls on Police Service to Exploit Biometrics
Police productivity and response times could be improved with the introduction of biometric technology, a conference heard. Carl Gohringer, Business Development Manager, NEC Security Solutions, UK called on the police service to exploit biometrics in terms of its own security and not just to use it to catch criminals.

False Details Foiled by Facial Recognition Software in Florida
Dozens of people giving false details were arrested in Florida after facial recognition software installed in police patrol cars correctly identified them, a UK Biometrics conference heard. Fifty patrol cars were equipped with a digital camera and software installed on laptops already used by officers in Pinellas county to get round the problem of individuals who deliberately give false details.

A Scottish biometrics company has picked up funding to the tune of £300,000 to expand its FingerSwipe programme. Yarg Biometrics, which was formed in 2004, secured the funding package through the Upstarts investment vehicle, a subsidiary business of the Strathclyde University Incubator Ltd.

Only Six Months to Develop PNC Training Structure
ACPO has just six months to develop a structure on engaging the private sector in the delivery of training for PNC trainers. In its recent report, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary said chief officers must decide if and how private organisations are to be used to deliver training in the future by April 2006.

ACPO Plans to Cut False Alarm Rate
ACPO has announced plans for greater involvement in private security firms to cut the false alarm rate. There are eight and half times more false alarms than genuine ones. ACPO wants to work with the security industry to reduce the rate to two to one by 2007.

‘No Appetite’ Found for Discontinuing Attending Alarms
Police officers will continue to attend alarms, but chief officers have not ruled out withdrawing the service, according to ACPO’s latest policy on security systems. It found ‘no appetite’ to discontinue attending alarms, but added: ‘Although there is no current likelihood of such a change, the possibility cannot be ruled out.’
