Failure to Deport Foreign Criminals 'Deeply Regrettable' says Clarke
The Home Secretary has called the failure to deport hundreds of foreign criminals, including murderers and rapists 'deeply regrettable'. A total of 1023 foreign nationals were released from prison between February 1999 and March 2006 without any consideration over whether they should be deported.

A man has been charged in connection with the death of Northumbria PC Joe Carroll. Steven Nigel Graham, 39, of Sandhurst Military Academy, appeared at Bedlington Magistrates Court on April 15th charged with the manslaughter of PC Joseph Carroll and assault causing actual bodily harm to Insp Brian English.

London Crime at a Five Year Low
Crime in London is at a five year low and more crimes are being solved according to annual crime figures published by the Metropolitan Police. Overall crime is down three percent, bringing the number of crimes committed down to under a million. This includes the lowest level of homicide since 1998 and falls in many forms of violent crime.

First Case for New Serious Crime Review Unit
Lothian and Borders' newly-formed Serious Crime Review Unit will examine the death of a baby boy found on waste-ground in Edinburgh in 2001. It is the first case for the new team. The body of a baby, who was later given the name Craig Millar, was dumped by a footpath. Attempts had been made to burn the body.

Lack of Funding Major Obstacle to Surrey/Sussex Merger
Lack of Government funding remains the major obstacle to a successful merger between Surrey and Sussex police forces, a public meeting has heard. The Extraordinary Meeting, held at Surrey Police headquarters in Guildford, was called by Surrey Police Authority to consider whether to support the proposal by the Home Secretary to voluntarily merge with Sussex.

New Custody Facility for Cumbria
Cumbria Constabulary has received the go-ahead to build a custody facility at Durranhill in Carlisle. The new facility will be based at the former Rathbones bakery site and was chosen because of its position within the city and its road links to the motorway.

Thames Valley Police Exceeds Call-Handling Targets
Thames Valley Police has exceeded national call-handling targets, the force has revealed. Thames Valley Police answered 94.7 per cent of 999 calls and 93.6 per cent of calls to the non-emergency number within the target time limit, significantly exceeding the national target which is to answer 90 per cent of emergency calls within 10 seconds and non-emergency calls within 40 seconds.

Northamptonshire Police Authority has refused to volunteer to merge the force with four others in the East Midlands, despite demands to do so by the Home Secretary. Dr Marie Dickie, chair of the Authority, said the Government had failed to reassure them that they would cover the costs involved in the merger.
